english article

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6668485.stm

This article is basically about china and its take on the boycott of the 2008 Olympics that are bound to take place in Beijing a year from now. China claims that the boycott will fail although the article does not really explain why China made such a claim. The main reason why the boycott is taking place is because China is still selling arms to Sudan despite being fully aware of the genocide that is taking place in Darfur.

China’s actions have struck a chord with human rights groups and some US and European politicians. These are the party’s responsible for the boycott that is taking place. China’s response to the boycott was merely saying that the country has provided sufficient humanitarian assistance to the people in Darfur. Personally, I feel that china has not addressed the issue at hand. The party’s that initiated the boycott are concerned with the fact that china is selling arms to Sudan, not whether china has contributed to the humanitarian aid in Darfur. China may be trying to avoid discussing the issue at hand as they are fully aware that they are the ones at fault.

The article clearly states the ties between china and Darfur. One of the more important relations between the two countries is the fact that china buys oil from Darfur. China needs oil from Darfur, Sudan is currently ‘attacking’ Darfur and china sells arms to sudan. Now it rather clear that MAYBE china is getting oil at a reduced priced or maybe even at no cost by providing Sudan with the arms needed for the genocide in Darfur. And to compensate for its actions, China sends humanitarian aid to Darfur. This, I find is rather weird as china is the ones helping Sudan carry out the genocide in Darfur by supplying them with arms but at the same time, they are the ones offering humanitarian aid to the people in Darfur.

It is very clear that china is aware of its actions and how wrong they are. This is because china tries to avoid the boycott by saying that it is ‘against the spirit of the games’ and NOT by claiming that the country is innocent.

In my opinion, the reason why china is desperately trying to avoid the boycott of the Olympics is because it will generate a lot of money for the country. China also may have started improving Beijing so that it can accommodate the athletes and their followers. If the Olympics in Beijing is boycotted, it will result in major financial losses for China. I personally feel that china is really selfish as they allow the genocide to continue just so that they can have cheaper oil.
