The illegal capturing and exporting of Indonesia’s wildlife has been going on for quite some time now. The poaching of these various plants and animals, mostly animals, is rather popular in the country mainly because of a few main reasons. A large number of the people in the country are uneducated and have to resort to such means to and income. The country is also way too big and this prevents the authorities from being able to control the activities, mostly illegal ones, that go on in the country’s dense forests. The level of corruption in the country is also rather high and thus it is almost impossible to bring the poachers to justice.
In my opinion, the Indonesian authorities do not have their priorities straight. They focus on creating new laws and improving those already in place instead of building up a steady group of law enforcers to actually carry out these laws. Currently Indonesia’s wildlife protection laws are one of the best in the region but the country is still suffering from poaching problems as the laws are not being carried out properly. The countries current law enforcement force is also highly corrupted. This results in further inefficiency in the country and this also contributes to the manifestation of the already serious poaching problems.
In order to put a halt to the poaching problem the country is facing, Indonesia’s authorities have to look at the underlying problem at try and solve it. Not just merely coming up with new amendments to the wildlife protection laws. The main problems, as mentioned are the law enforcement force and the size of the country. Since it is impossible to change the size of Indonesia, the only way to solve the poaching problem is to better the law enforcement force.
The authorities have to eradicate corruption amongst its ranks of officers in its law enforcement force. They also have to expand their force to include remote areas in the dense forests so that poaching is reduced in these areas. By eradicating corruption in the force, more poachers can be successfully caught and brought to justice. This in turn will deter other poachers from continuing with their acts of cruelty.
